Hello there,
As I look back on my college experience, I begin to think about what it is that I actually expected.
I remember being nervous and afraid of getting lost on campus.
“What if I don’t find my class?” “What happens if I’m late on the first day?”
These were questions that were consistently popping into my head days before my first day at college. Then, the first day came and things got real…
As I walked onto campus, all I had was a map of the campus, a schedule of my classes, and a nervous energy rattling through my entire being. I was doing all of this while at the same time, trying to appear calm and confident, like I knew exactly where I was. I think the first few times I had to look down at the campus map people realized (and I did too) that this really was my first day.
I remember seeing people walking at what seemed like lightning speed to their classes. Then, I looked around and I saw people in groups of people talking with each other as if they had been friends for years. I’ve never felt so alone and out of place.
I realize now that this could have easily been avoided with some easy preparation throughout the summer before my first day. But hindsight is 20/20, right?
Well actually, through my experience, I now have the opportunity to help new students cut out the tension that I went through and go straight to the confident, smiling, relaxed student that I became by the end of my first semester.
I see now that if I just simply went to the school a few days before class started, I could walk around the campus and get comfortable with the environment. This would have helped me tremendously on the first day.
Also, if someone would have told me that college students are much more laid back than high school seniors, I may have felt more comfortable asking somebody for directions to my class.
I’ve seen and heard stories about freshmen in high school getting trashed and if that was happening in high school, what would they possibly be doing in college?!?
But as it turns out, it is really a much more friendly environment on college campus. The people are friendly, they are more laid back, and they are almost always willing to help you if you ask them for it.
So my mission here is to help new college students take simple steps to prepare properly for this incredible experience called college. I assure you, it really can be simple, easy, and fun.
My business partner Jaycob and I have had over 8 combined years of college experience to back us up with this. We have gone through the process, we have taken advantage of the free services that most colleges offer, and we have learned how to make the most out of this incredible experience.
We are here to help show the way to incoming college students, so that they don’t have to discover everything the hard way.
I will say this in closing…
There is information out there to help you build confidence, relax, make friends, study effectively, imagine yourself to be a college graduate so that you ensure your success, and just about everything else you can think of!

- The price of attending a Community College compared to a State or University. The price per unit for a Community College in California this year is only $20 per unit. An average semester at a Community College will only cost you about $500, while the cost of a State University will likely cost you around $1,500 a semester; maybe even more! The price for attending a University, like UC Berkeley, I won’t even tell you how much it will cost. I’m sure you can imagine. So, if you don’t have $15,000 or more to spend on your college education, then beginning at a Community College is a smart start.
- The class size as a Community College compared to a State school or University. While most Community College classes have about 35-40 people in them, many of the State University classes have over 100 students in the class. Sometimes, upwards of 300 students or more! It may be harder for you to learn the material covered in a class with over 300 people.
- The size of an average Community College class makes for a smooth transition right out of high school. Most of the classes available are similar in size to a high school class. Also, you will have a better opportunity to talk one on one with your teacher if you have a question about the material. PLUS, if you have taken a break from school and have decided to come back, then a smaller, more personal class size will benefit you as well; especially if you are at all intimidated by the overall college experience.
- No need to take the SATs.The SATs can be a very stressful time for high school students and by starting at a Community College, you will be saving yourself and your parents’ time, energy, and money!
- You will likely receive enrollment priorityif you are transferring to any University after you complete your General Education classes at Community College. Also, if your school offers transfer agreements, you will receive guaranteed enrollment if you qualify. Be sure to check with your school to find out which, if any, schools they have this agreement with.
As you can see, there are many reasons why you may want to start your college experience by attending Community College. You will save money, have a more comfortable experience, and receive a great education.
There are many high educated, deeply passionate professors that teach at Community Colleges.
I hope this post has informed you on starting you or somebody you know off in the right direction with their college experience.
Bless you,
Jared James
